GWR 4-4-0 No 4120 'Atbara', the founder member of the Atbara class, is probably acting as station pilot when seen shunting stock at Snow Hill station

GWR 4-4-0 No 4120 'Atbara', the founder member of the Atbara class, is probably acting as station pilot when seen shunting stock at Snow Hill station circa 1920. The class was a development of the Badminton class introduced in 1897, itself a development of the earlier Duke class. Further modifications to the Badminton class resulted in the Atbara class entering service in 1900, the names for these locomotives generally being taken from contemporary military engagements or senior army commanders. Later engines were named after cities of the British Empire. Built at Swindon works in April 1900 No 4120 remained in service until September 1929 when it was withdrawn from Leamington Spa shed to be scrapped by Swindon Works.
