Looking in the direction of Wolverhampton with a view of the signal gantries either side of the entrance to Hockley No 2 tunnel. The tunnel's entrance was just a short distance from Kenyon Street bridge which lay between it and Hockley No 1 tunnel. Its bore was 160 yards long (148 metres) and it passed under Hall Street, Branston Street, Spencer Street, Northampton Street and Vyse Street. Because Hockley Goods yard with its many points and sidings was immediately the other side of the tunnel, signals were required at its entrance, as seen above, operated by the signal box seen through its bore on the right. The two sets of signals controlled different aspects of the approach to Hockley station and goods yard and the wall of the tunnel behind each gantry has been painted white to enable drivers to see the signals more easily.
