GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
GWR Route: North Warwickshire Line
Birmingham Snow Hill Station: gwrbsh762
View of the entrance to Hockley No 1 tunnel looking in the
direction of Wolverhampton with Hockley No 2 tunnel seen through its bore in
June 1960. The railway North out of Snow Hill to Wolverhampton was made up of
quadrupled track which quickly passed under Livery Street and Northwood Street
in the form of a short tunnel 136 yards (125 metres) long to briefly reemerge
before it then entered Hockley No 2 tunnel. Unlike the tunnel at the between
Moor Street and Snow Hill neither of Hockley's tunnels represented too much of
a challenge with a heavy train or discomfort for the crews from excessive smoke
and fumes.
