Looking towards Stratford upon Avon and the signal box situated at the end of the down platform and opposite the goods yard. All of the points connected with the goods yard were sited opposite the signal box thereby providing the signalman with an excellent view of any shunting operation that impacted upon the main line. The signal box was not permanently open until 1938 being switched out when loadings were light and thereby saving the cost of employing staff. Switching out a box was a simple matter. All required was for one of the neighbouring signal boxes to take over its responsibility for the traffic passing through its section. Signals on the main line in the switched out section would be locked in the off position, thus two sections became one. This was a common practice on most railways, a procedure most common on a Sunday when goods traffic was very light.
