GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Fenny Compton Station: gwrfc82b
Close up of image 'gwrfc82' showing some of Fenny Compton
station's staff standing in line posed for the photographer. Even though the
station served a rural area the staffing of the station still required a much
higher staffing level than would be the case today. During the inter war period
some nine or ten members of staff were employed despite the GWR deploying a
number of economy measures. The staff of such a station would have included the
likes of station master, a booking clerk, porter, signalman and shunter. The up
platform structure is built from timber but was of a different design to seen
on the down platform being built when the Oxford to Birmingham line was first
opened. The closeness of the lampposts was necessary as the illumination
provided from the oil lamps was fairly poor.
