GWR Route: North Warwickshire Line
Henley in Arden - Original Station: gwrha1403
|
Ex-GWR 0-6-0PT 94xx class No 9432 is seen cautiously
reversing down the gradient towards the head shunt in order to gain access to
the yard in 1958. Roger and Chris write, "the 'Henley Goods' arrived at Henley
mid-morning, having served other stations on its way from Bordesley Junction.
This was a Tyseley 'non-progressive' turn, the crew booking on about 9 am and
working light engine to Bordesley No 2 up yard. In the 1950s the engine for
this turn was usually a 57xx already prepared for them, the drivers in
non-progressive link including Enoch Millan, 'Darky' Lucas and Glyn Llewellyn.
Glyn, a native of South Wales, had been in the link for medical reasons since
at least 1950. A former main line driver, he is remembered with great affection
by Tyseley enginemen - "a man to look up to". He also earned great respect as
secretary of the Tyseley branch of ASLEF (Associated Society of Locomotive
Engineers and Firemen). The Henley turn was usually worked by junior firemen
who learned a lot from him".
