GWR Route: North Warwickshire Line
Henley in Arden - New Station: gwrha1416
An unidentified ex-GWR 2-8-2T 72xx class locomotive is seen
taking on water whilst held on the up bay loop line waiting its turn to proceed
with a northbound freight circa 1950. Some of the northbound freights were
banked from Stratford on Avon station or alternatively a pilot engine was
attached to the front. On occasion this might be varied with the banker refuged
at Henley-in-Arden and attached at the station. In these circumstances, the
banker would stand in the short spur opposite the signal box, as seen above,
and when the freight had come to a stop with its guard's van clear of the
points the banker would buffer up to the rear. The banker would then provide
assistance to either Earlswood or Danzey and then return to Stratford on Avon
shed.
