GWR Route: North Warwickshire Line
Henley in Arden - New Station: gwrha468
Ex-GWR 4-6-0 Hall class No 5982 'Harrington Hall'
doubleheads an unidentified 2-6-0 on an up excursion from the South West of
England to Birmingham Snow Hill and beyond. Unlike most railway companies when
double heading a train the GWR placed the train engine in front of the
supporting locomotive whereas the LMS and others placed the extra locomotive in
front. The GWR's view was that the driver of the train engine needed to be at
the front in order to be responsible for obeying instructions from the
signalmen. The other companies viewed the extra time needed to detach the train
engine and to place the pilot engine inside was too great.
