GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Hatton Bank: gwrhb1469
Ex-GWR 2-8-0 28xx class No 2886 is seen passing Warwick Common
as it begins its ascent of Hatton Bank on 21st December 1963. The climb was was
nearly 4 miles long and started at an incline of 1-in-95 on a tight curve after
a short level stretch just north of Warwick station. The majority of the ascent
was at 1-in-103/110 which is why there was a banking engine positioned at
Warwick station. Built at Swindon works to Lot 321 in March 1938 No 2886
remained in service until July 1964 when it was withdrawn from Westbury shed
(82D) to be scrapped in April 1965 by Birds of Morriston.
