An unknown King Class 4-6-0 locomotive descends Hatton Bank at speed on an up express on 1st December 1951. They were designed for express passenger work and with the exception of one 4-6-2 locomotive No 111 'The Great Bear', they were the largest locomotives the GWR built. Named after the Kings of England, beginning with the then reigning monarch, King George V, the remaining class members were named by going back through history. Following the death of King George V, the highest-numbered engine was renamed after his successor 'King Edward VIII; and following the abdication of the latter, the next-highest engine was also renamed after his successor 'King George VI'.
