GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Harbury Cutting: gwrhc94a
Close up of image 'gwrhc94' showing GWR 0-6-0 No 311 being
utilised to haul spoil during the widening of Harbury cutting. What is of
interest is that the gang of navvies are clearly working on the permanent way
which is obviously only 4' 8½" wide yet is being constructed in the
manner of classic Broad Gauge permanent way. The locomotive and the upturned
contractor's temporary track does however look as if they are 7'-0¼"
wide. The description 'permanent way' was used to differentiate from a
contractors "temporary track or way". As can be seen, the spoil train sits on
very uneven track whilst in front of the train adjacent to the broad gauge,
there appears to be temporary track upended as the rail is below the sleepers
which are fixed in the manner we associate today, being cross ties.
