GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Hockley Station: gwrhd675a
Close up of image 'gwrhd675' showing some of the variety of
cartage road vehicles employed by the GWR at Hockley in 1940. The steady
increase of mechanised transport in between the World Wars might well have been
even faster had it not been for the great depression of the 1930s which acted
as a break to the economy and therefore growth as well as the ability for the
GWR and others to invest in petrol or diesel road vehicles. However the
outbreak of World War Two in September 1939 saw the halt in decommissioning
horse drawn vehicles and an increase in their use due to fuel rationing.
