GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton

View along Canal Basin Drive, a private GWR owned road leading to the basin complex from All Saints Street. The house on the left was initially provided for the use of the Horse Superintendent. On the right is the two storey stable block with the ramp used by the horses nearest to the camera. The stables were equipped with their own veterinary facilities and veterinary surgeon. Frank Popplewell recounts that each Easter a competition would be held for the best groomed and decorated horse. Judging was the responsibility of the Horse Superintendent and Hockley Depot General Manager. In addition to the appearance of the horse the carter's own appearance was taken into consideration with certificates and rosettes being awarded.
