GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Hockley Station: gwrhd691a
Close up of image 'gwrhd691' showing the unidentified Great
Western Railway's 0-6-0ST marshalling trains in the yard. This part of the yard
was known as the 'Farm' for most of the yard's existence despite the fact that
this description alluded to the yard's very beginning when the area was still
very rural and local farming traffic was being accommodated. Kenneth Harrison
who started to work as a clerk at the yard in 1939 recalls that the yard
recorded traffic passing through the shed in a book still described on a white
label as the Farm Book. The two yard huts are in the same location as
seen in other views but the shed are different and smaller. Note too the
sleepers in the foreground which appear to be second hand but still in good
enough condition to be reused in areas of the yard where the speed of travel
was not an issue.
