GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Hockley Station: gwrhd709b
Close up of image 'gwrhd709' showing a Box Van at Platform 3
within Top shed next to one of the temporary destination signs. Wagons received
at Hockley would be sorted on one of the reception roads where its destination
within Hockley would be decided by the yard inspector. The shunting engine
would then move the wagon to the correct road within the appropriate shed. As
locomotives were not allowed within the shed should the wagons be short of
their destination within the shed then they would be moved by the hydraulic,
later electric, capstans. Wherever possible temporary bridges across the
sidings within the shed and between the platforms would be erected as this
would save invaluable time for porters moving goods between wagons. Unloading
crews consisted of three men - a checker who unloaded the goods from wagons and
sorted small consignments for their destinations, and two porters who
transported the goods on a sack truck (two-wheeled barrows).
