Looking towards Birmingham with the goods yard and a row of wagons seen in the distance at the end of the up platform on the left circa 1916. The goods yard was only accessed from the down line with traffic on the up line being required to pass forward of a trailing crossover which ran from the up line to the down line and then reverse on to the down line before moving forward in to the goods yard. Whilst this procedure - the railway equivalent of a three point turn - was a longer procedure than just entering the yard directly, trailing points were much safer than facing points which could be prone to opening and thereby derailing the train. There was also smaller set of sidings behind the Signal Box on the down line.
