GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton

Handsworth & Smethwick: gwrhs2648

Looking south towards Birmingham from the footbridge with the original up main platform on the left

Looking south towards Birmingham from the footbridge above the main lines. On the left is the original up main platform, while the island platform on the right was built when the line between Handsworth Junction and Birmingham Snow Hill was quadrupled in 1909. Under the canopy on the island platform there were two platform buildings containing passenger facilities; the nearest being the general waiting room, and the second containing the ladies waiting room and toilet plus the gentlemen's lavatories. At the end of the platform ramps is the bridge over Booth Street and beyond this Handsworth South Signal Box and Queens Head Sidings. The long ladder crossing from the Goods Yard on the down side of the station to the up marshalling sidings can be seen in the distance.
