Official Great Western Railway Circular dated 20th February 1893 from the Goods Department regarding the accounting of traffic at Handsworth & Smethwick Station. Prior to the opening of the freight facilities at this station, traffic was booked to Birmingham. According to the Railway Clearing House (RCH) Handbook of Railway Stations (1894), Handsworth & Smethwick station had facilities for Goods, Passengers, Livestock and the maximum power of the crane was 10 tons.
