GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton

Handsworth & Smethwick: gwrhs90b

Close up of the Wolverhampton end of Handsworth & Smethwick station's Platform One showing the porters barrow crossing

Close up of image 'gwrhs90' showing the Wolverhampton end of Handsworth & Smethwick station's Platform One and the porters barrow crossing at the end of the platforms. The columns on the right are part of the main structure where the principle facilities of the station were housed. The main building of stations were often located on the platform where the majority of passengers would depart from as it made sense for the booking office to be adjacent to the main departure platform. The signals in the background, all lower quadrant, graphically demonstrate why it was necessary to have a white painted quadrant behind the signal arm to ensure drivers could see whether the road was clear or at danger. The two signals seen without this device are for trains travelling towards the camera.
