GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Knowle & Dorridge Station: gwrkd124
GWR 4-6-0 Saint class No 2983 'Redgauntlet' is seen at the
head of a down express train as it approaches Knowle and Dorridge. First built
at Swindon in July 1905 as 4-4-2 No 183 with half-cone boiler 'Red Gauntlet'
(sic) was first allocated to Paddington shed. It received further modifications
being fitted with a full-cone boiler in December 1909 and then a superheater
fitted in October 1910 before being rebuilt as a 4-6-0 April 1912. Its name was
altered to 'Redgauntlet' in June 1915 and it remained in service until it was
withdrawn from Tyseley shed in March 1946.
