GWR 4-6-0 Saint class No 2989 'Talisman' is seen in full cry
on the Down Main at the head of a Paddington to Birkenhead express. Originally
built at Swindon works with half-cone boiler in September 1905 as an unnamed
4-4-2 No 189. it was first allocated to Bath Road shed in Bristol. It was named
in 1906 and fitted with full-cone boiler in May 1908 but later reverted to
half-cone boiler with superheater in July 1911 only to be re-fitted with
full-cone boiler in April 1912. 'Talisman' was rebuilt as a 4-6-0 in October
1912 and remained in service until it was withdrawn from Chester shed in
September 1948 for scrapping at Swindon works.
