GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Knowle & Dorridge: gwrkd2801b
Close up of Knowle and Dorridge's 120 foot long by 40 foot
wide metal framed Goods Shed. The design accommodated a single line on the left
running through the shed and direct access for road transport beneath the
overhanging roof, the latter designed to keep the goods and men dry during
inclement weather. Between the two is a platform at a height similar to the
floor of a wagon thereby allowing goods to be off-loaded by hand using a porter
or luggage trolley. In front of the goods shed are timber buildings which would
be used by staff for storing yard tools, a lavatory, and a mess and possibly
office facilities. Between the two sets of tracks the GWR has provided a wide
space in order that coal could be stored by merchants. This was very important
as the GWR only allowed its wagons to be kept in the yard for short period of
time before it started to charge additional costs. The wagons on the left are
being emptied via a horse drawn cart.
