GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Knowle & Dorridge Station: gwrkd2807
A late Victorian view of Knowle and Dorridge station showing
staff standing between the platforms in order to pass parcels from one platform
to another circa 1891. The down signal on the left has two arms, one above the
footbridge the other beneath the footbridge. The reason for this was because
the footbridge would obscure the view of the crew of an approaching train. The
signal post is much higher than normal in order for the top arm to be seen from
a distance. The lower arm, called a repeater, is to allow the crew to see the
signal when in the station as the top arm would be obscured by the footbridge.
The sign on the passenger building on the right reads 'Lloyds News'.
