GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton

Ex-Southern Railway 4-6-2 Merchant Navy Class No 35026 'Lampart
and Holt Line' approaches Lapworth on the up line with the return leg of 'The
Aberdonian' rail tour on 26th June 1966. Roger Siviter writes 'organised by the
Warwickshire Railway Society (no connection - Ed), this was an ambitious rail
tour started from Waterloo station, departing at 10:30 am on Friday 24th June
1966, the rail tour visited Banbury, Birmingham, Market Drayton, Crewe,
Manchester, Hellifield, Carlisle, Hawick, Edinburgh, Larbert, Alloa, Thornton,
Dundee, Aberdeen, Perth, Edinburgh, Doncaster, Nottingham, Dudley, Old Hill,
Birmingham, Banbury before returning to Waterloo'. The train consisted of
sleeping cars and a restaurant car and was hauled by a variety of locomotives
including ex-LMS 5XP 4-6-0 Jubilee Class No 45581 'Bihar and Orissa', ex-LNER
4-6-2 No 4472 'Flying Scotsman', a pair of ex-LNER 0-6-0 J37s No 64570 and
64618, ex-LNER A4 4-6-2 No 60024 'Kingfisher', BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 No 92113
as well as two other locomotives, an ex-LNER V2 2-6-2 and an ex-LMS 5MT
2-6-0.
