On the right can be seen the up starter signal in the 'off' position meaning it has been set to allow a train to pass through the station. This signal is known as a lower quadrant model as it points downwards from the horizontal when it is in the 'off' position. This type were very common on the GWR although not very common on other railways after an accident caused by snow preventing the signal to return to the horizontal position which indicated danger.
