GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Leamington Spa - BR Locomotives: gwrls2069
Ex-LMS Princess Royal Class 4-6-2 No 46210 'Lady Patricia'
enters the station on an up express on 18th February 1956. The ex-GWR King
Class 4-6-0 locomotives, which had worked the line between Wolverhampton and
Paddington since their introduction in 1927, had been suddenly and temporarily
withdrawn because of severe cracking to their frames. With 30 King Class
locomotives removed from service the Western Region lacked sufficient spare
capacity in Class 8 locomotives and was therefore forced to borrow locomotives
from other regions. The London Midland Region lent seven of their Pacific
locomotives all designed by William Stanier who had served most of his career
with the GWR.
