A 1936 view showing that the rebuilding of the station commenced at the Birmingham end of the down platform. The four lines between the down and up platform were by 1910 dedicated to through traffic whereas when first built the two central lines were used to stable empty passenger stock. The central portion of the train shed which had covered all four lines had been removed by the late 1880s. The platforms were extended twice after opening, in 1886 when a small extension was added to both platforms and again in 1901.
