Ex-GWR 40xx Class 4-6-0 No 4021 'British Monarch' stands at Leamington's up platform with an up express circa 1952. Allocated to Oxford shed, in the post-war era No 4021 would have been rostered on the Bournemouth and Birkenhead trains as between Oxford and Chester, and on Worcester and Paddington trains. By the 1950s their duties had become more secondary although they were still to be found occasionally on main-line express services. Built by Swindon works to Lot 178 in June 1908, No 4021 was to remain in service until October 1952 when it was withdrawn from 81F Oxford shed to be scrapped at Swindon works.
