The area is lit by gas lighting whilst behind turntable is a fence made from iron railings. The siding in the middle was normally occupied by loco coal wagons. On the right is the tall brick chimney of the sand furnace. The GWR fed sand to the wheels of its locomotives by gravity which meant that it was very important that the sand used was absolutely dry otherwise it would block the pipe.
