GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Leamington Spa Station: gwrls237c
Close up of image 'gwrls237' showing Leamington Spa's goods
yard and sidings and a rake of five cattle wagons. John Lewis writes 'The
photo was taken sometime after 1904 because of the large "GW", which seems not
to be in a new state, on the end of the nearest wagon, which I think was
probably built in 1904 as well. It is interesting to note that it has an iron
roof.' The cattle wagons have been bleached white by being disinfected with
limewash, a process which needed to be undertaken after each use. On the end of
the nearest wagon under the 'G' is word 'Large' indicating that this is the
larger cattle wagon supplied by the GWR. The sign on the right includes
references to the 'Anglo American' and Royal Daylight' and 'White Rose'
companies which would seem to indicate that to the right of the camera and out
of sight was the oil depot.
