GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Leamington South Junction: gwrls3943
Close up of aerial photograph taken in 1934, showing the
area between the L&NWR and Great Western Railway main line on the north
side of the Warwick and Napton canal. The open area between the canal and the
link line was given over to allotments with access from the tow path.
The link line seen here was built in 1908 to facilitate a
new direct joint passenger service from Cardiff via Leamington and Peterborough
to Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. This service only ran for three months from
the start of July until the end of September 1908, before being rerouted via
Oxford and Cambridge. The infrastructure built for this venture not only
included the double track link line and junctions at either end, but also a
signal box built by each company to control their junction. The two signal
boxes can be seen in the top left (L&NWR) and bottom right (GWR) of this
aerial photograph.
