Close up of the the traversing carriage slung under the beam and the 16 feet long jib crane demonstrating how it could lift loads of up to one ton. The traversing carriage could move at a speed of 70 feet per minute, while the jib was able to revolve at a speed of two revolutions per minute. The hoisting gear was capable of raising and lowering the one ton load at an average speed of 33 feet per minute. The steel column on the right has a landing for the crane to abut against enabling the operator to use the ladder from the landing to either climb off or on. The chains (often referred to as brothers) holding the box are not at very safe and would give Health & Safety inspectors a fit if seen today. The hooks should be positioned at the four corners and at a much lesser angle.
