The three-car prototype ACV lightweight diesel railcar set stands at Moor Street on a local commuter service

The three-car prototype ACV lightweight diesel railcar set stands at Moor Street on a local commuter service. The railcars were divided into two types, a powered single vehicle, with a cab at each end, and an unpowered trailer vehicle, which enabled British Railways to operate either a single-car or 2-car unit off peak, and a three-car formation at busy times. The first three car set was a protype tested at a number of locations throughout the country followed by production vehicles which were purchased new by British Railways during the period 1955- to 1957. The initial pre-production cars were painted a two-tone grey livery with a red band running around the entire body beneath the windows (as seen above), with each vehicle was fitted with deep skirts.
