Moreton-in-Marsh to Stratford upon Avon Tramway: gwrmt3141

Poster announcing the opening of the Stratford & Moreton Railway on 5th September 1826 with a Great Market. The opening day was treated as a public holiday in Moreton-in-Marsh and the local newspapers reported that the crowd attending numbered twenty thousand. Five covered carriages carrying the committee and other dignitaries left Stratford-on-Avon at 10 o’clock and after arriving in Moreton-in-Marsh dined in the Unicorn Inn. They were preceded by a band playing music and followed by twenty-one wagons carrying coal, coke, timber, lime and other merchandise. It was reported that some of these wagons returned on the same day loaded with grain.
