Tennis Players at the Great Western Railway's Birmingham Branch Tournamont in 1925

The Birmingham branch of the Social & Educational Union arranged both Tennis and Cricket matches at the sports ground at Olton. This cutting from the Great Western Railway Magazine of July 1925 shows the numbers of staff involved in a tennis tournament. In addition, an annual ‘All Lines Competitions’ was held in various sports (including Tennis and Cricket). This was a knock-out completion with matches taking place between different branches of the union during the summer. An example found in the 1928 Magazine records the following details in the July and August issues:

1st Round scores Home Team   Visitors Team
Tennis Wolverhampton B Team 2 Birmingham 1
Cricket Birmingham 67 Wolverhampton A Team 26
2nd Round scores
Cricket Banbury 49 for 6 Birmingham 16

Banbury branch Cricket team went on to win this event in the ‘All Lines Competition’ for the third successive year.
