GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Queens Head Yard: gwrqhy2022
Another view of ex-GWR Castle Class 4-6-0 No 5091 'Cleeve Abbey'
at Queens Head sidings on 29th June 1964. GW Churchward designed the Star Class
after some initial experiments with wheel arrangements (4-4-2 and 4-6-0).
Production began in 1907 with No 4001 first being built and finally ceased in
1923 with No 4072, there having been a cessation in production from 1914 to
1922. There were just two set of Walschaerts valve gear between the frames, the
valves to the outside cylinders being driven by rocking levers. An enlarged
version of the design was introduced in 1923, as the Castle Class, of which
about 170 were constructed, including some rebuilds from the 'Star' class.
