The ground adjacent to water troughs became saturated from the regular splashing and the drainage required constant attention to protect the permanent way. Here a Dean Single Locomotive with the Birmingham Express picks up water as it passes a gang at work on the drainage (circa 1903). Regular maintenance schedules included; weekly maintenance of troughs, fortnightly clearance of drainage catch pits, and monthly examination of water tank valves by fitters.
