GWR 4-6-0 No 2924 'St Helena' is seen approaching Rowington Junction with an express service having passed over Rowington Troughs circa 1910. Built by Swindon works in September 1907, No 2924 was to remain in service until March 1950 when it was withdrawn from 85C Hereford shed to be scrapped by Swindon works. The class were designed as express locomotives and were experimental in that they incorporated several types of 2-cylinder passenger steam locomotives designed by George Jackson Churchward and built between 1902 and 1913 with differences in the dimensions. The majority of these were built as 4-6-0 locomotives; but thirteen examples were built as 4-4-2 (but converted to 4-6-0 during 1912-13). They proved to be a successful class which established the design principles for GWR 2-cylinder classes over the next fifty years.
