GWR Route: The North Warwickshire Line
GWR Route: Stratford on Avon to Hatton
Stratford on Avon Shed: gwrsa1446a
Close up of image 'gwrsa1446' showing the coaling station
with its drawbridge type door which was lowered horizontally to allow the coal
tubs to run out over the tender or bunker. The drawbridge type door was fixed
to a section of the coaling station that projected approximately three feet
over the track below which, with the door lowered, ensured that the coal would
fall into the centre of the tender or bunker. The windows on each of the sides
allowed staff to check for incoming or departing locomotives. The electric
light by the drawbridge door was a later addition to facilitate coaling at
night and supplemented the original lamp seen on the corner to the right.
