Close up of image 'gwrsa1493' showing Stratford on Avon station and the two local passenger trains standing in the down platform and the up 'bay' platform. The length of the train standing in the up 'bay' would indicate that its a service for Birmingham whereas the two-coach train seen standing at the down platform is most likely a service from Leamington Spa. Both trains have a Clerestory brake coach at the rear of the train. The purpose of the design of a Clerestory coach was to utilise the raised centre of the roof to insert windows and thereby to provide light to its inner space. Whilst initially successful, the Clerestory design necessitated the coach having a lower ceiling on either side of the raised central section. Later passenger requirements utilising corridor connections and luggage racks required the raising of the profile of the roof of coaches.
