The photograph records the change of the station's name from Stratford on Avon as used by the Great Western Railway to Stratford Upon Avon. The change was initiated by British Railways in 1952 although the above enamel sign and concrete posts did not replaced the GWR pattern until July 1954 when the whole station was re-signed in British Railway's corporate colours and designs. After nationalisation on 1st January 1948 the station became Stratford on Avon General because of the LMS station which retained its name. It should be noted that the reference to the former SMJ station by the name of Old Town was only initiated after the closure of the station to passengers.
