Internal correspondence from Mr E Murphy dated 4th July 1888 relating to alternative to there being a signal box

Internal correspondence from Mr E Murphy dated 4th July 1888:

Dear Sir,

The traffic at this Junction appears very small, and I am inclined to think we might work it with Annett’s’ Key attached to the Train Staff, allowing the Junction something after the manner proposed.

The Annett’s Key would of course be attached to the Train Staff & I presume that it could be arranged for the train calling there to be in possession of the Staff, for without this the Junction could not be used and for the Guards to put off and take our wagons without any of the Station Staff being required to assist.

Failing this, the only alternative would be to take the traffic up to the Stratford Goods Yard by means of a Pilot Engine, but this would mean additional cost to this Company.

What are the hours of the Signalman at the Junction and would more than wages of one man be saved if it were closed?

Yours truly E Murphy Esq

Written in red on the letter are the Signalman’s hours: 7:45am to 8:15pm.
