A view of the mechanical 'Pump' trolley and its companion trolley which was stored in siding at Stretton-on-Fosse in 1947. The trolley was powered by the handle being pushed up and down and braking was achieved by the foot being pressed down on the sprung pedal seen above the floor between the wheels. The companion trolley was attached to carry larger loads and had solid wheels and dumb buffers.

Mechanical trolleys were purchased by the Engineering Department to enable their Permanent Way staff to reach work locations quicker as part of the Economic System of Maintenance (see 'misc_equip237.htm'). This particular trolley appears to have been manufactured by the Kalamazoo Railway Supply Company of Michigan, USA. Their No1 Hand Car is described in their 1897 catalogue as follows:

  • Platform - six foot long by four feet, four inches wide
  • Axles - 1½ inch taper fit
  • Bearings - 3 inch diameter
  • Wheels – 20 inch diameter pressed steel
  • Weight - 510 lbs
