GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Small Heath and Sparkbrook Station: gwrsh1335
General view of the original 1863 station looking in the
direction of Snow Hill showing the booking office erected on Golden Hillock
Road over bridge. The platforms were lengthened at the Tyseley end of the
station to accommodate the larger trains required to convey the increase in
commuter traffic in the late 19th century. In common with other stations built
at the opening or shortly afterwards its two platforms were built at a distance
from each other to accommodate a pair of Broad Gauge tracks hence the very wide
'six foot' gap between the two tracks. The description 'six foot' emanated from
the fact that the space was approximately six feet between rails.
