GWR Duke Class 4-4-0 No 3284 'Isle of Jersey' is seen on a three-coach express service on 9th May 1939. Built at Swindon works in April 1899, No 3284 was to remain in service until April 1951 when it was withdrawn from 84F Stourbridge Junction shed to be scrapped by Swindon works. Until 1927 this class of locomotive was responsible for all expresses running south of Stratford upon Avon because of the weight restriction on Stonehouse viaduct which was located south of Gloucester on the Midland route to Bristol. The strengthening of the bridge allowed more larger and powerful locomotives to be employed.
