Although an LMS design it was built by British Railways at Swindon works in November 1952 until their own version of the design was commissioned. Although relatively new No 46504 was withdrawn in October 1966 from Newton Heath shed in Manchester for scrapping during February 1967 by J Cashmore of Great Bridge.
