The GWR 'button' logo is still evident on the side of the locomotive despite it being ten years since the demise of the Great Western Railway upon nationalisation on 1st January 1948. Built at Swindon works in March 1934, No 8700 was to remain in service until February 1962 when it was withdrawn.
