A 1930s aerial photograph showing the mileage sidings in Tyseley Goods Yard with the Carriage Yard and Cripple Sidings

A 1930s aerial photograph showing the mileage sidings in Tyseley Goods Yard with the Carriage Yard and Cripple Sidings on the other side of the running lines in the background. The extension to the Goods Shed and the six ton yard crane can be seen.

While the majority of the wagons in the yard are opens, in the closest sidings are a number of tank wagons; several of which are painted light stone colour with a bright red band indicating that they contain a Class A inflammable liquid (typically; Petroleum Spirit, Motor Spirit or Gas Oil, Solvents, etc.) which drain and evaporate to leave no residue and have a flash point below 23deg C (73degF). In the siding behind are two black tank wagons. These will contain Class B products (typically; Bitumen, Diesel fuel, heavy fuel oil, Kerosene, Paraffin, etc) which tend to leave a residue and have a flash point above 23degC (73degF) but below 60degC (141gedF). This side of the sidings, in the centre, are two bunded fuel tanks showing the location of the bulk petrol storage installed in 1928.
