Inside the Engine Room was a belt driven suction pump and a
number of associated storage tanks. At this time the vacuum cleaner was in its
infancy and those institutions with large requirements like Hotels, Theatres,
Department Stores, Barracks and Railway Companies had static arrangements like
this, from which rigid and flexible pipes were taken to the point of work. The
principle manufacturer of vacuum cleaning equipment in the UK, was the British
Vacuum Cleaning Company, which had been incorporated in 1903 having been
established the previous year by Hubert Booth, who had patented an invention
for the cleaning of carpets and other articles by suction caused by the
creation of a vacuum in 1901.
