View between the two turntables in Tyseley Roundhouse on Saturday 23rd May 1953. Either side are 2-6-2T 5101 class large Prairie Tank locomotives, while the single clear road between allowed for movement of locomotives within the shed. At this time the locomotives stabled at Tyseley shed generally fell into three main categories (quantities are from Tyseley's August 1950 allocation):

  1. Shunting and short trip locomotives – forty-four 0-6-0PT Pannier Tank locomotives (forty 57xx class, one 74xx class and three 84xx class).
  2. Local Suburban Passenger locomotives – thirty-one 2-6-2T Prairie Tank locomotives (twenty-seven 5101 class, one 81xx class, two 3150 class and one 31xx class).
  3. Mixed Traffic locomotives used mainly on freight turns from Bordesley Junction and other Birmingham Goods Depots, but also some passenger turns – twenty-nine 4-6-0 and 2-6-0 locomotives (seventeen 49xx (Hall) class, five 68xx (Grange) class, one 78xx (Manor) class and six 43xx class).
